11 terms

The board and the turn

Know where a card goes and when you can act.

Active Pokémon
Your Pokémon in the Active Spot, which normally attacks.

Example

Move a Benched Pokémon into the Active Spot after your Active Pokémon is Knocked Out.

See alsoBenchKnock Out
Bench
The area for your other Pokémon, normally holding up to five.

Example

Prize cards
Six face-down cards set aside from your deck. Taking all of them is one way to win.

Example

Damage counter
A marker representing ten damage. Damage remains until removed by an effect.
Placing damage counters is different from dealing attack damage. Weakness and Resistance do not change placed counters.

Example

An effect places two damage counters. That adds 20 damage even if the target has Weakness.

Knock Out
A Pokémon leaves play when its damage reaches its HP, or an effect Knocks it Out.

Example

Discard the Knocked Out Pokémon and its attached cards. The opponent takes the awarded Prizes.

Retreat
Discard the printed Energy cost to move your Active Pokémon to the Bench, normally once per turn.

Example

Discard two Energy for a Retreat Cost of two and choose a Benched Pokémon as the new Active.

Switch
Move Pokémon between the Active Spot and Bench using a card effect.
A switch effect is not a retreat. Moving to the Bench clears Special Conditions and effects of attacks.

Example

An effect moves your Paralyzed Active Pokémon to the Bench without paying its Retreat Cost.

Mulligan
Reveal and redraw an opening hand that has no Basic Pokémon.
It is required, not a choice. The opponent may draw a card for each extra mulligan you took compared with them.

Example

Your seven cards contain no Basic Pokémon. Reveal them, shuffle them back and draw seven again.

Pokémon Checkup
The step between turns that resolves Special Conditions and effects scheduled for Checkup.

Example

After an attack ends the turn, resolve Poisoned, Burned, Asleep and Paralyzed checks in that order.

A 60-damage attack against matching −30 Resistance deals 30 damage before other relevant effects.
